Children's Week Is Approaching: Help Your Children Face It With a Smile
20 October 2017 · About the author: Dr Halim Prayogo (Dentist)
As Children's Week approaches (21 to 29 October), United Smiles wants all Australians to know that it is never too early to start a good oral hygiene routine. Starting to care for your child's teeth from the moment they appear gives them a good chance of healthy teeth for life.
What can you do for your child?
Visit your dentist early
Many Australian children don't see a family dentist until well over two years old, far later than recommended. You should visit no later than your child's first birthday, or as soon as a tooth breaks through the gums.
Teach oral hygiene at home
Begin brushing a child's teeth as soon as they break through the gum, using a fluoride-free toothpaste until they are old enough to spit it out without help, and an appropriately sized soft-bristled brush with gentle, circular motions. If brushing is difficult, try brushing to music or along with a favourite video, aiming for two minutes each time.
Flossing
Flossing should begin as soon as any two teeth touch, even though a child will need help for many years.
Thumb sucking
If a child is still sucking their thumb or regularly taking a pacifier by age three, it is worth trying to deter the habit, as it can cause tooth misalignment and let harmful bacteria into the mouth.
Dental exams
Children should see a dentist by their first birthday, and as often afterwards as the dentist recommends, so problems can be caught early.
