Dental Crowns
A dental crown is like a cap that encases the whole visible portion of a tooth, improving and reinforcing its strength, size and appearance. Crowns can be made of a ceramic or metal base covered with a layer of ceramic, and back teeth may use a gold crown.
The uses of dental crowns
- Treating broken or decayed teeth that cannot be fixed with a filling
- Improving the appearance of a flawed tooth
- Placing over a dental implant
- Covering a tooth where most of the top part has been removed
- Repairing a defective tooth filling
The dental crown procedure
Placing a crown usually requires two appointments. At the first, the tooth is reshaped, an impression taken and sent to the lab, and a temporary crown fitted to protect the tooth while the permanent one is made. At the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, the tooth cleaned, and the permanent crown fitted and cemented in place.
