At your appointment, your dentist will examine your tooth and explain why it needs to be extracted. An x-ray will be taken to help plan the best way to remove the tooth and check whether an abscess is present; if so, you will be given a course of antibiotics before the extraction. Afterwards you will be given a list of do's and don'ts to help your tooth socket heal as quickly as possible.

Common situations that require tooth removal

  • Severely cracked or damaged teeth
  • Severe decay and/or infection
  • Risk of infection due to other health concerns
  • Crowded mouth and orthodontic necessity
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Financial considerations where a reduced-cost option is needed

Is it painful?

The only uncomfortable part of the treatment is the local anaesthetic, which your dentist will make as mild as possible. The anaesthetic numbs the entire extraction area, so when the tooth is removed you should feel no pain.

Before your appointment

Before the procedure starts, tell your dentist about your medical history, any medications you are taking, and any phobias you have about tooth extraction or dental procedures. Feel free to ask questions; your Mernda dentist at United Smiles wants you to be relaxed and comfortable during treatment.
