Sleep Dentistry
Dental fear, dental anxiety and dental phobia are common in Australia, and can lead people to delay or avoid the dental care they need.
What is sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry, also called sedation dentistry, is the use of anaesthesia during treatment to put the patient into a relaxed state, using sedatives such as depressants, tranquilisers or anti-anxiety drugs administered before the procedure. It can be used for any dental treatment, from a simple clean to more invasive procedures.
There are different levels of sedation. With minimal sedation the patient is relaxed and awake; with moderate sedation speech slows and the patient may not remember much about the procedure; with deep sedation the patient is almost unconscious but still awake.
Benefits of sleep dentistry
With sleep dentistry, a procedure that may take several hours can feel like it lasted only a few minutes. Although sedation may make you feel drowsy, you do not sleep throughout the procedure. Other benefits include:
- A relaxed, calmer experience
- Comfort with the dental procedure
- Less restlessness during a long procedure
- Better control of the gag reflex
