Jaws are often not large enough to allow wisdom teeth to take up their correct position, so they can become completely or partially impacted. Impacted teeth can cause pain, infection in the overlying gum, damage to the tooth in front, complications with existing orthodontic treatment, and difficulty cleaning the back teeth, leading to decay.

Fully erupted wisdom teeth can often be removed simply, but impacted wisdom teeth may need a surgical approach involving lifting some of the gum around the tooth, removing it, and suturing the gum back into place. Some swelling and discomfort may be experienced for a few days afterwards.

The importance of wisdom teeth removal

  • Infection can occur if an impacted wisdom tooth is not removed
  • Partly covered teeth are at risk of debris accumulating and possible infection
  • Untreated symptoms such as swelling, pain and bad odour may result in severe infection

Smoking and wisdom tooth removal

If you smoke, it is advisable to avoid the habit for a couple of days after wisdom teeth surgery. According to the American Dental Association, smoking can delay your healing process, increase the risk of dry socket, affect your sense of taste and smell, stain your teeth and cause bad breath.
